Flag History of Namibia

On 21 March 1990, the flag of Namibia was adopted upon independence from South Africa. During South African rule, the South African flag was used. During this time, as part of its policy of ”Separate Development“ (apartheid), separate homelands (Bantustans) were established, like in South Africa. They adopted distinctive flags except Kaokoland, in the northwest corner of Namibia on the border with Angola, with the Himba people, descendants of a Herero group that got isolated from the others in the 19th century as the most represented ethnic group; and Tswanaland, a tiny sliver of land around the village of Aminuis on the border with Botswana. All these Bantustans were abolished upon independence.
